Dry matter content: key indicator for efficient slurry separation

What is dry matter content?

Dry matter content (DM content) is an important indicator that specifies the proportion of solid components in a mixture of substances. This value is expressed as a percentage (DM %) and helps to assess the composition of substances such as manure or biogas substrates after the liquid phase has been reduced. The DM content is crucial in many areas, including waste management, biogas technology, food technology and especially in agriculture, where it plays a central role in manure separation.

A higher TS content means that the proportion of solids in a mixture is greater, making it drier and more concentrated. The TS content is a key quality characteristic of slurry and an essential result of slurry separation, as a high TS content indicates effective separation of solid components.

The importance of dry matter content at Paulmichl

At Paulmichl, we use state-of-the-art slurry separators that are specially designed to achieve a high dry matter content while enabling effective separation of solid and liquid components. With our machines, we can achieve a dry matter content of up to 32%, which ensures optimal use of the solids for further processing or as fertiliser. A higher dry matter content offers many advantages: the solids remaining after separation are more compact and have a higher nutrient density. These contribute to more efficient fertilisation, increase storage space in the slurry tank and reduce solids on the turf.

To the slurry separators

A high dry matter content is also particularly advantageous when it comes to optimising slurry for energy production in biogas plants. The targeted separation and concentration of organic solids increases the dry matter content of the substrate and allows better control of the fermenter feed. This leads to more stable process biology, more consistent gas production and higher methane yields. At the same time, separation improves plant stability and increases the economic efficiency of the biogas plant.
